IS COLOUR OF DIESEL AN INDICATION OF ITS QUALITY?

IS THE COLOUR OF DIESEL FUEL AN INDICATION OF ITS
QUALITY?

This is a very prominent question in the midst of diesel suppliers all over. What does the colour means with regard to quality of the diesel?

The following are key points :

Firstly the answer is No.
Colour variant is for specific purpose or requirement of a country.

It’s a dye added for tax purposes.

In the UK and Canada, diesel fuel sold for off-road purposes is dyed red and sold at a lower tax rate than road diesel. You get fined if you’re caught driving on a public road with red diesel in your vehicle’s tank, and the authorities can and do conduct periodic inspections for this.

For example,Norway, Finland, and other European countries similarly dye their diesel fuels specific colors for tax purposes. It has nothing to do with the quality of diesel fuel or its cetane number rating.

The country of origin of diesel determines the colour of Nigerian diesel .
It is never an indicator of quality . The only time colour matters is in the case of major contaminants . And clear diesel is always free from most colouring contaminants.

Also, when manufactured, all diesel oil comes out more or less the same colour;.

The different colours that you see for diesel are added afterwards(well, during the manufacturing process, but on purpose to make them different colour)

This can be for a number of reasons… some countries (Ireland springs to mind), have different pricing systems for their diesel depending if its used for agricultural machinery of road vehicles. Putting the cheaper version in, can be detected through colour, and incurs fines. Sometimes, its just to differentiate between different manufacturers, and who knows it may be an aesthetic thing as well in some case. Light crude diesel is higher quality, lower emission.

NB: Extracted.
