Panamanian firm, McDermott International Limited has been contracted by Azikel Petroleum Limited, one of Nigeria's indigenous oil company for the engineering and procurement of a modular 12,000 barrels per day hydroskimming refinery. The modular refinery project, expected to be completed on schedule in 2021 within budget, is located in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State in Nigeria.

A modular petroleum refinery is a process plant for refining crude oil that is engineered and constructed on largely skid-mounted structures. Each skid contains a section of the entire process plant and through interconnecting piping, the component skids are linked together to form an integrated operable process plant at the site. Modular refineries are usually available in capacities ranging from 1,000 to 30,000 barrels per day (bpd).

In a statement released on Wednesday 15th of July, 2020, by the President of Azikel Group, Dr Eruani Azibapu, Oil and Gas Goodness gathered that the Azikel Refinery is a flagship project for Nigeria, as it is the first hydroskimming refinery to advance to this level of achievement within the modular refinery realm.

Federal Government of Nigeria has since granted operational licenses for 38 modular refineries. Only two of them were launched in 2018, with eight more in various stages of completion.

As contained in the terms of contract between the Panama domiciled and Nigerian firm, Azikel will build the facility, involving early construction, including site recovery and backfilling, as well as completion of roads, perimeter wall, drainage and the site's security gates.

Remarking on the monumental feat, Tareq Kawash, Senior Vice President of McDermott in Europe, Middle East and Africa said "McDermott has been an integral part of what is one of the few refineries to be built in Nigeria and we look forward to expanding our presence further by delivering the next phase of this important project."

He added that "Our decades of modularization experience makes us uniquely positioned to deliver this scope and the team has done a great job of developing a simple process design that meets all of Azikel’s product specification requirements."

Construction is ongoing on a 200 metre shoreline protection, which will be used for the delivery of the refinery modules and other equipment.
