SCORES FEARED DEAD IN DELTA GAS EXPLOSION

No fewer than five persons have died while others sustained varying degrees of injuries on Friday following an explosion at a gas plant in Agbor, the headquarters of Ika south local government area of Delta state.

Executive Governor of Delta state, Ifeanyi Okowa who confirmed the incident disclosed this to journalists on Saturday after visiting the plant, stating that the inferno destroyed lives and properties.

He described the explosion as an unfortunate incident and announced that the state government would pick the bill for medical treatment of the injured victims.

He added that the injured victims were referred to a specialised centre for the treatment of burns at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for further treatment because of the high degree of burns they sustained.

“It was an unfortunate fire incident involving a gas station where the tanker was trying to discharge gas,” he said.

A resident, Anthony Walker, also said that the explosion occurred due to leakage from the dispensing hose.

He said the conductor informed the truck driver of a leak in the hose, forcing the driver and conductor to run away.

He said:” I saw a huge fire at Osadebe Oil and Gas Plant at about 5.00 pm when I rode into town from Umunede.

“I met two friends at the scene who joined in filming the fire outbreak, but unfortunately they were both burnt in another explosion from the truck”, he lamented.
