As 2018 wrapped up, the oil and gas industry was abuzz with the acquisition of Forte Oil’s downstream owned by the popular billionaire Femi Otedola by another billionaire, Abdulwasiu Sowami. Abdulwasiu Olatunde Sowami is the Managing Director/CEO of Prudent Energy and Services Limited, an indigenous oil company, with over a hundred staff located in Ikeja GRA, Lagos state. Although, he was not born with a silver spoon, he has been able to carve a niche for himself in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
An alumnus of the University of Maiduguri and a Master’s degree holder in Corporate Governance from Leeds Becket University, UK. Sowami began his career with Besse Oil and Services Limited, moved on to Cosmos Oil Limited and later to Ignite Energy Limited. Presently, he has a depot in Oghara, Delta state and a lot of fuelling trucks that delivers nationwide. He also has three vessels, two named after his late mother and wife.
Alhaji Wasiu, as he is popularly called by his staff and close relatives, is in his late fourties. A native of Ogun state, he is married with seven children and is an ardent lover of football. His company recently partnered with the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) through the signing of a five-year sponsorship agreement.
Having spent over 20 years in the Oil and Gas industry, he is highly revered among his peers because of his intelligence coupled with his keen ability to take calculated risk which puts him ahead of his competitors.
As a philanthropist, he sponsors a huge number of persons to pilgrimage every year among other humanitarian activities he engages in.
Sowami is not given to limelight as he intentionally avoids the publicity of his personal brand. Over the years, he has managed to stay off the public eye until recently. According to a source, he left the country with his family upon acquiring Forte Oil to avoid vain attention from the press.
